History & Significance

The area along Bastian Mawatha was once a chaotic canal-side with rundown warehouses, polluted water and dubious activities. The Urban Development Authority (UDA) redeveloped it at a cost of Rs. 150 million, with Sri Lanka Army engineering units greening Bastian Street and Navy units cleaning the canal. Architect Thushari Kariyawasam designed the stalls—red-roofed pagodas on grey cemented floors and wooden walkways—to create a calm oasis. Officially opened on 25 August 2014 by Minister Maithripala Sirisena, it relocated unlicensed street vendors to proper stalls, boosting local trade. Though some stalls stand vacant and lake water can look polluted, it remains a beautified hub for vendors and visitors.

Practical Visitor Information

Entry is free—walk in from the west or east ends. Expect opening hours roughly from 8 AM to 8-10:30 PM. The best time is around 5 PM when lighting enhances the serene atmosphere for photos and shopping. Note some reviews mention vacant stalls, so you might find a quieter scene.
