After Wendt's death in 1944, his brother Harry envisioned creating a permanent memorial centre, but Harry passed away just a year later. It fell to their mutual friend Harold Peiris to complete the construction. The theatre portion opened on 12 December 1953 with a production of Maxim Gorky's The Lower Depths, starring Iranganie Serasinghe and produced by E. F. C. Ludowyk. The Lionel Wendt Gallery followed in May 1959.
