A Roadside Spectacle in Tea Country

At 97 metres, Devon Falls is among the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and certainly the most conveniently located — it's clearly visible from the A7 highway between Hatton and Talawakelle. Named after an English coffee planter named Devon who owned the surrounding estate in the 19th century, the falls cascade in two streams down a sheer rock face framed by lush green tea estates.

Viewing the Falls

A designated viewing area along the roadside offers excellent views of the full waterfall without any walking required. For a closer experience, a trail descends from the road to the base of the falls, though this path is steep and can be muddy. The surrounding landscape of neatly terraced tea plantations adds to the scenic beauty — it's a quintessentially Sri Lankan hill country vista.

Combined with St. Clair's Falls

Devon Falls is often visited alongside St. Clair's Falls (also known as 'Little Niagara'), located just a few kilometres further along the same road. Together they make for an excellent half-day of waterfall viewing in the heart of tea country. The area around Hatton and Talawakelle also offers visits to working tea factories where you can learn about the tea-making process.

Getting There

Devon Falls is located on the A7 highway between Hatton and Talawakelle, approximately 6 kilometres from Talawakelle. The falls are about 175 kilometres from Colombo (approximately 5 hours by road). The scenic Colombo-Badulla railway passes through Hatton — from Hatton station, a short tuk-tuk ride reaches the falls.
