A Park Born from History

Galle Face Green's story is deeply woven into Sri Lanka's colonial past and modern identity. The promenade was originally laid out in 1859 by British Governor Sir Henry George Ward, designed initially as a place for leisurely walks. The Dutch had previously used this stretch of land for a purely military purpose—positioning their cannons to fire at Portuguese forces.

The park's original footprint was considerably larger than what you see today, and it served as the venue for a remarkable variety of sports and recreational activities: horse racing, golf, cricket, polo, football, tennis, and rugby. In 1879, British expatriates introduced golf to Ceylon, with the first games played right here on Galle Face Green, marking the beginning of the Colombo Golf Club. That same year, the inaugural Royal–Thomian cricket match took place on the Green, with players reportedly rowing across Beira Lake in boats to reach the grounds.

Over the decades, Galle Face Green evolved from a sporting venue into something far more significant—a democratic public space where Sri Lankans gather for celebrations, protests, and collective moments. It has hosted religious ceremonies during papal visits and served as the focal point for major political demonstrations.
