Imagine strolling through elegant colonnades and sunlit courtyards where history whispers from every stone, now alive with the buzz of boutique shops and cinema screens. Arcade Independence Square invites you into Colombo's heart, where colonial grandeur meets contemporary charm in a seamless blend that captivates the senses.

What to See & Do

You'll love exploring this two-floor haven spanning 8,400 square metres, home to over 40 stores and services offering international brands alongside local craftsmanship. Browse fashion boutiques, pick up perfumes or sunglasses, and savour meals at on-site restaurants. The highlight? Sri Lanka's first boutique cinema, The Empire Cineplex, perfect for a relaxed movie after shopping. Wide walkways make casual browsing a breeze, while the preserved architecture—symmetrical façades, colonnades, and spacious courtyards—turns every visit into an architectural adventure. Evenings bring a chill vibe ideal for hanging out amid landscaped gardens.

History & Significance

Arcade Independence Square stands as a testament to thoughtful revival. Construction of the Jawatta Lunatic Asylum began in 1879 from plans dating to 1875 by Governor Sir William Gregory, completing in 1889. It closed in 1926, later serving as University College and then Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Renovated under the Independence Square Redevelopment programme by the Urban Development Authority of Sri Lanka, it reopened as a shopping complex on 13 July 2014, officially opened by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Housed in the former Jawatta Lunatic Asylum and Western Provincial Council Building, the project preserved original 19th-century colonial features without major alterations, highlighting Colombo's colonial heritage amid its urban evolution.

Practical Visitor Information

Entry is free, with the complex typically open from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily. It's best in the evening for that relaxed atmosphere, though any time suits shopping sprees. Wide walkways accommodate easy strolling, but it's not ideal for young kids due to limited play areas—better for shoppers and architecture enthusiasts. Set in serene surroundings, it offers a peaceful escape from Colombo's hustle.
