The Japanese Peace Pagoda
Eastern Province, Ampara
A Symbol of Peace
Japan's Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order has built peace pagodas around the world as monuments to non-violence and world peace. Sri Lanka has several, and this one near Ampara serves as both a place of worship and a symbol of the friendship between Japanese and Sri Lankan Buddhist traditions.
The Structure
The gleaming white pagoda follows the distinctive Japanese stupa design — a smooth dome topped with a spire. Four gilded Buddha statues in niches around the base depict key moments in the Buddha's life: birth, enlightenment, first sermon, and passing. The simplicity of the design creates a serene atmosphere conducive to contemplation.
Visiting
The pagoda is accessible from Ampara town by local transport. The site is open daily with free entry. The elevated location provides pleasant views. Dress modestly. It's a contemplative site — visitors are encouraged to observe a few moments of silence.
