Dehiwala Zoo
Western Province, Colombo
Sri Lanka's Premier Wildlife Experience
The National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala, commonly known as Dehiwala Zoo, has been welcoming visitors since 1936. Located just 11 kilometres south of Colombo city centre, it's one of the oldest zoological gardens in Asia and remains the most popular family attraction in the Colombo metropolitan area.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses over 3,000 animals representing approximately 350 species. Highlights include Asian elephants, Bengal tigers, lions, leopards, and bears. The extensive bird collection features both Sri Lankan endemic species and exotic birds from around the world, with large walk-through aviaries. The reptile house is home to crocodiles, pythons, and various snake species, while the aquarium showcases both freshwater and marine fish.
Facilities and Shows
The butterfly garden offers a peaceful enclosed space filled with colourful native butterfly species. The elephant performance (check current schedule) demonstrates the intelligence and training of the zoo's Asian elephants. Well-maintained pathways wind through themed sections, with food stalls and rest areas throughout. A small children's area allows interaction with domesticated animals.
Visiting the Zoo
The zoo is open daily from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry at 5:00 PM). It's best to arrive early to see the animals at their most active and avoid afternoon heat. The Dehiwala railway station is a short walk from the zoo entrance — trains run frequently from Colombo Fort station (about 30 minutes). By road, it's a 30-40 minute drive from central Colombo depending on traffic.
