Wilderness and Archaeology
Wadinagala is one of many rocky outcrops in the eastern dry zone that served as shelters for ancient Buddhist monks. The site features caves with rock inscriptions and traces of habitation spanning centuries. Today, the surrounding forest provides habitat for wildlife and the hilltop offers views over the eastern plains.
Visiting
A remote site best accessed by four-wheel drive from Ampara. No facilities. Bring water and supplies. Best visited as part of a broader eastern archaeology tour. A local guide is helpful for finding the less obvious cave sites.
