Veddagala takes its name from the Vedda people, Sri Lanka's indigenous inhabitants whose ancestors have lived in the island's forests for over 16,000 years. The forested hills around Veddagala represent the kind of landscape that sustained Vedda communities for millennia — rich in game, wild fruits, and honey.
Natural and Cultural Heritage
Cave shelters in the area contain evidence of prehistoric habitation. The surrounding forest supports elephants, deer, and numerous bird species. The area offers insight into the relationship between humans and the natural landscape that existed long before recorded history.
Visiting
Located in a rural area of the Ampara District. No formal tourist facilities. Visit with sensitivity — this is culturally significant land. A local guide familiar with the area is recommended.
