What to See & Do

You'll discover the remnants of a once-thriving Buddhist monastic complex at Shasthrawela, historically recognised as Pabbatha Bodhigiri Vihara. Wander among scattered stone pillars and ruins that hint at its former grandeur as a hub of learning. The site holds deep religious and heritage value, tied to Sri Lanka's monastic traditions. While no tourist infrastructure is confirmed, it's an ideal spot for quiet reflection on the area's layered history. Combine your visit with nearby beaches for a balanced day of culture and relaxation—perfect if you're seeking authentic, low-key exploration.

History & Significance

Shasthrawela stands as a prominent ancient Buddhist vihara and centre of learning in eastern Sri Lanka's Ampara District. Known as Pabbatha Bodhigiri Vihara, it was the abode of five hundred Arhants, making it a great seat of learning in the East. This site within the Arugam Bay Tourism Planning Area under Pottuvil DSD embodies the island's rich monastic legacy.

In modern times, tragedy struck on 17 July 2010, when the villages of Ragamwela and Shasthrawela were burned down by forces to displace residents—around 350 families—from the Paanama area for a military base. Following the government change in 2015, decisions were made to return the lands, though implementation status remains unclear and unverified.

Practical Visitor Information

Access and conditions at Shasthrawela are unverified, so approach with caution. No entry fees, hours, or facilities are confirmed in available sources. Best visited during daylight for safety, and consider the dry season for easier travel. The site's religious significance calls for respectful behaviour—dress modestly and maintain silence around ruins. Proximity to Arugam Bay suggests it's feasible for day trips, but confirm local conditions before heading out.
