A Tranquil Eastern Waterway

Rambakan Oya is a tributary of the Gal Oya river system in eastern Sri Lanka. The reservoir created by its dam has transformed the surrounding area into productive farmland while also creating an important wetland habitat. The combination of open water, marshland, and bordering forest supports a rich ecosystem.

Birdwatching

The reservoir margins attract a variety of waterbirds — painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, various heron species, and kingfishers are commonly seen. The early morning and late afternoon are the best times for birdwatching when birds are most active at the water's edge.

Visiting

Located in the Ampara District. No formal tourist facilities, but the reservoir bank is accessible by road. Bring binoculars for birdwatching. A peaceful spot for a picnic or quiet contemplation. Best combined with visits to other eastern attractions.
