Nuwaragala
Eastern Province, Ampara
The City Rock
Nuwaragala rises above the flat eastern landscape, its rocky peak visible from surrounding villages. Local tradition holds that the summit once supported an ancient city — hence the name 'nuwara' (city) 'gala' (rock). While archaeological evidence of a full city is limited, cave shelters at the base do show signs of ancient monastic habitation.
The Climb
The hike to the summit is moderately challenging, passing through dry zone woodland and scrambling over rock surfaces near the top. The summit provides 360-degree views of the eastern plains — paddy fields, reservoirs, and distant hills stretching to every horizon. Early morning offers the best conditions.
Practical Information
Located in the Ampara District. No facilities. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and good footwear. A local guide is recommended. Best combined with other eastern attractions.
