History & Significance

Opened in 1893 after relocating from Colpitty Race Course, Colombo Racecourse quickly earned acclaim as one of the East's finest harness racing tracks, boasting top design, facilities, and size. It became home to the Colombo Turf Club, complete with its pavilion and clubhouse beside the grandstand. In 1922, it pioneered with the region's first totalisator, boosting its prestige.

World War II dramatically altered its path—from late 1941, after Singapore's capture, it morphed into a temporary single-runway airfield. Construction fell under D. S. Senanayake, then Minister of Agriculture and Lands. Royal Air Force squadrons like No. 258 with Hawker Hurricanes and No. 11 with Bristol Blenheims operated here, using nearby bungalows as headquarters; it even played a stealthy role during the 1942 Easter Sunday Raid.

Post-war, horse racing resumed briefly, but the 1956 betting ban ended it for good. The site decayed, with land portions allocated to the University of Colombo, sports clubs like Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, and occasional military use by the Sri Lanka Army and Air Force. Revival came in 2011 when the Urban Development Authority kicked off renovations, restoring the grandstand and Turf Club building by 2012, birthing this rugby powerhouse and lifestyle spot. Its story mirrors Colombo's evolution: colonial horse racing glory, wartime necessity, and now a vibrant sports and leisure icon.
