Sangamankanda Point
Eastern Province, Ampara
Where Land Meets the Open Ocean
Sangamankanda Point thrusts eastward into the Indian Ocean from Sri Lanka's eastern coastline, one of the most dramatic and least-visited headlands on the island. The rocky cape is battered by waves on three sides, creating a wild and atmospheric landscape far removed from the sheltered beaches elsewhere on the coast.
The Temple and Lighthouse
A Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva occupies the highest point of the headland, overlooking the ocean. The temple's origins are ancient, though the current structure has been rebuilt multiple times. It remains an active place of worship. A colonial-era lighthouse stands nearby — no longer operational but a photogenic landmark against the coastal backdrop.
Getting There
Sangamankanda is located south of Pottuvil on the east coast. The final approach is along a rough track through scrubland — a vehicle with some ground clearance is advisable. The remote location means you may have the entire headland to yourself. Bring water and sun protection.
