Where the Waves Meet the Wild Coast

Arugam Bay and Pottuvil represent one of South Asia's most authentic coastal experiences. Located on Sri Lanka's southeast coast in the Eastern Province, this duo of destinations has transformed from a quiet fishing area into a world-renowned surf hub, whilst retaining its genuine, unhurried character. You'll discover why surfers return year after year, and why non-surfers find themselves equally captivated by the natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere.

What to See & Do

Surfing at Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is internationally recognised as one of the world's premier surf destinations. The Main Point offers the most powerful and consistent breaks on the east coast, delivering impressive rides across long stretches of water. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or just beginning, you'll find breaks suited to your level. Pottuvil Point, located about 6 kilometres north, offers excellent right-hand point breaks with a more relaxed vibe and fewer crowds than the main break. The water here is generally chilled, and you'll have plenty of space to practice and progress.

Pottuvil Lagoon Adventures

An absolute must-do whilst you're here is exploring Pottuvil Lagoon by boat. This beautiful natural feature is teeming with wildlife—crocodiles, monitor lizards, kingfishers, egrets, golden eagles, and even elephants crossing the lagoon at certain times. Local fishermen offer boat tours at sunrise and sunset, providing an intimate way to experience the area's natural richness. You can book tours through your accommodation, but seeking out the local fishermen directly ensures more of your money reaches the community.

Beach Relaxation

Beyond the waves, Arugam Bay's beaches offer plenty of space to relax, swim, and watch spectacular sunsets. The half-moon beach is lined with beachfront bars and restaurants serving both traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and Western food, so you can enjoy meals with ocean views.

History & Significance

Arugam Bay, known locally as Arugam Kudah, is a historic settlement within the ancient Batticaloa Territory. The area has deep roots in Sri Lanka's cultural landscape, with a mixed population of Muslim, Tamil, and Sinhala communities. Like much of the southeast coast, both Arugam Bay and Pottuvil were significantly impacted by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which destroyed much of the bay and town. The recovery that followed has been remarkable, with the area transforming into a thriving tourism destination whilst maintaining its authentic character. Today, tourism and agriculture form the backbone of the local economy, with paddy fields and coconut cultivation still visible across the landscape.

Practical Visitor Information

Entry & Access

Beaches in the area are open 24/7 with free entry, making it easy to visit whenever suits your schedule. The area is best suited to active visitors who don't mind remote access and are prepared for basic infrastructure in some areas.

Best Time to Visit

The surfing season peaks from May to September, when you'll find the most consistent and powerful waves. However, the area is accessible year-round, and quieter months offer a more peaceful experience if you're seeking solitude.

Gateway to Yala East National Park

Arugam Bay serves as the primary access point to Yala East National Park, making it an ideal base if you're planning wildlife viewing or safari adventures.

Getting There

Arugam Bay is located 320 kilometres east of Colombo and 117 kilometres south of Batticaloa. Pottuvil town, situated 4 kilometres north of Arugam Bay, serves as the commercial and transportation hub for the area. From Ella, direct buses depart at 7:45am and 9:15am, taking you directly to Pottuvil. If you miss these, you'll need to take three separate buses, changing at Wellawaya and Monaragala, which takes considerably longer. From Pottuvil town, you'll need a short tuk-tuk ride (about 5 kilometres) to reach Arugam Bay itself. Alternatively, you can travel by train or bus to experience Sri Lankan life more intimately, though you'll still need to complete the journey by tuk-tuk from Pottuvil.

Tips for Visitors
