Ancient Ruins in the Rice Paddies

The Veheragala site at Pulukunawa preserves the remains of an ancient Buddhist monastery that flourished during the Anuradhapura period. The centrepiece is a partially restored dagoba surrounded by the remnants of image houses, residential buildings, and meditation halls built from stone and brick.

Archaeological Features

Stone pillars from ancient buildings still stand in rows, indicating substantial structures once existed here. Carved moonstones — semicircular stone carvings at building entrances — display the artistic sophistication of the monastery's builders. Several inscriptions record royal patronage and donations to the monastery.

Visiting

Located in the Ampara District, the site is accessible by road from Ampara town. No entrance fee. The site has no tourist facilities — bring water. Best combined with other eastern heritage sites for a full archaeological tour of the region.
