Wild Camping in Bird Paradise

Kumana National Park covers 35,665 hectares of dry monsoon forest, mangrove swamp, and lagoon habitat on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast. The park is best known for the Kumana Villu, a natural lake that becomes one of the most important waterbird breeding grounds in South Asia during the nesting season (April-September).

The Camping Experience

Camping in Kumana is a genuine wilderness experience. Designated camping areas provide basic cleared ground near the park facilities. You'll need to bring your own camping equipment, food, and water. Night-time brings the sounds of the jungle alive — the calls of owls, nightjars, and insects, and occasionally the distant trumpeting of elephants.

Wildlife

Over 200 bird species have been recorded, including painted storks, spoonbills, herons, and the rare black-necked stork. Mammals include elephants, leopards, sloth bears, deer, and wild boar. Crocodiles inhabit the lagoons and waterways.

Practical Information

Camping must be arranged in advance through the Department of Wildlife Conservation. A wildlife guide is mandatory. The park entrance is near Panama village, about 22 kilometres south of Arugam Bay. The best season for birdwatching is April to September; for mammals, January to March when water sources shrink.
